Katsu Sando Recipe

Katsu Sando

The Katsu Sando (カツサンド) is a popular Japanese sandwich made with tonkatsu (breaded and deep-fried pork) placed between slices of shokupan (Japanese toast bread). Typically cut into triangles or rectangles, this sandwich has become a beloved staple across Japan, frequently found in bakeries and convenience stores. It’s a common choice for school or work lunches due to its convenience and satisfying taste.

Tonkatsu has been a part of Japanese cuisine for over a century, initially introduced at Western-style restaurants in Tokyo. The Katsu Sando originated a couple of decades later in the same region. Interestingly, it’s believed that the sandwich was first crafted in entertainment districts linked to geisha culture. The small-sized bread was specifically designed to avoid smudging geisha’s lipstick or staining their mouths and to serve as a quick snack between performances.

Today, Katsu Sando comes in a variety of forms. Some high-end tonkatsu restaurants and hotels offer luxury versions featuring high-quality meat, perfect for special occasions. On the other hand, convenience stores provide affordable, grab-and-go options that are popular for those seeking a quick meal. Local bakeries also offer Katsu Sando, making it easy to enjoy for any meal of the day. This range of choices ensures that the sandwich can be enjoyed in various settings, from casual lunches to more refined meals.

The classic Katsu Sando often includes shredded cabbage alongside the pork, though this isn’t always the case. When making it at home, you might add vegetables like lettuce or cucumber. Or, for a simple version, you can focus solely on the pork, just with condiments like tonkatsu sauce and Japanese mustard.

For homemade Katsu Sando, it makes an excellent bento lunch option, though preparing everything fresh in the morning can be challenging. Our tip is to make extra tonkatsu at dinner the night before, saving some portions for the next day. In the morning, you’ll only need to reheat the pork and assemble the sandwich. This approach not only saves time but also ensures a tasty, homemade lunch with minimal morning effort. Even though this means having tonkatsu two days in a row, it’s unlikely anyone will complain. Give this delicious dish a try and enjoy!
