Fried Wonton Recipe

Fried Wontons

Fried Wontons are a popular Chinese dish made from wonton wrappers which are filled with a mixture of ingredients like ground meat (such as pork or shrimp), vegetables, and seasonings. The filling is then folded and sealed in various shapes, but often resembling triangles. Fried Wontons are known in Japan and can be found in some Japanese restaurants, but they are not as commonly associated with Japanese cuisine as they are with Chinese cuisine. In Japan, they may be referred to as “age-gyōza” (揚げ餃子) or simply “wonton” (ワンタン) and are often served as an appetizer or snack.

Wonton wrapper or skins are thin sheets of dough typically made from wheat flour, water, and sometimes egg. You could make them at home just like Gyoza skins, but they’re a pretty common ingredient sold at any supermarket in Japan. Japanese-style wontons may have variations in the filling and seasoning compared to traditional Chinese wontons. They can contain ingredients like ground pork or shrimp, along with seasonings like soy sauce, ginger, and garlic similar to Japanese Gyoza fillings.

Fried wontons are a popular appetizer in the United States too, especially in Chinese-American and Asian-American restaurants. They are often served as part of the appetizer menu in Chinese restaurants, along with other items like egg rolls, spring rolls, and dumplings. American fried Wontons could be similar to Asian counterparts, but sometimes they have their own twist. You may often find cream cheese as a filling in American wontons and served with sweet chili sauce, which are rarely seen in Japanese or Chinese versions. What we made here is a fusion of everything. We used ground pork, mozzarella cheese, and even cilantro as a filling. This may sound like a strange combination, but we believe all the flavors work very well together. No need to stick with this combination though. You can also come up your own creations.

Fried Wontons are very easy to make at home with only a few ingredients and simple steps, and you can make a bunch at once. And they are delicious, of course. They’re a perfect dish for holiday gatherings. Hope you try them!
