Fried eggs or sunny side up are widely eaten all over the world. It is a national food of every country. It is easy and cheap to make, nutritious, and dependably delicious. It varies by seasonings and what to be eaten with, but the basic taste is the same. In Japan, we often eat fried egg and ham cooked together. The addition of saltiness and extra protein from the ham make a simple fried egg taste better and heartier.
Sunny side up eggs, especially loosely set one, have become a very popular topping on everything for modern Japanese dishes. Yakisoba, Hamburger Steak, and even Curry and Rice often has fried eggs on top at restaurants there. Or at least you can order it as an add-on. Most likely the yolk is very runny, and it is used almost like a sauce or seasoning to the dishes rather than a side item.
Ham and Egg has been a popular breakfast in Japan for a long time. It goes well with Shokupan toast with butter, but also yummy draped over Steamed Rice. Not like the recent trend of always having soft yolks, the hardness of the egg yolk for the dish should be purely up to your liking. Ham for this dish is a regular lunch meat type, thinly sliced. Whatever you have in the fridge is fine. Seasonings are usually salt and pepper for Ham and Egg, but soy sauce, ketchup, and even Japanese mayo would work if you prefer. Together with a little green salad and fruit, Ham and Egg is a perfect meal to start the day. If it sounds good, try it tomorrow morning!
