Pizza Toast is literally toast with pizza toppings, and it is a popular snack or meal in Japan. It’s a super easy dish with almost no cooking involved, so absolutely anybody can make this.
“Melting cheese” is one of the staple ingredients in everyday cooking in Japan. It’s a kind of processed cheese and melts extremely well with heat. It looks like white square American cheese singles that are individually wrapped with plastic. The cheese can be used on Gratin and Hamburger Steak, for example. If you’re using this kind of cheese for Pizza Toast, your job is halfway done already. If you cannot find the Japanese cheese, although the taste and texture are different, use Mozzarella cheese instead.
For the pizza sauce, here we used ketchup, but you can certainly use store-bought or homemade pizza sauce or marinara sauce. Anything you have will work. When using ketchup, mix in a little seasoning such as garlic and mustard to add a little flavor and make it tastier. Signature toppings for Pizza Toast are often Japanese bell pepper (Piman), sliced onion, and ham or salami. But, you could use anything you already have in your fridge.
Pizza toast is perfect for a quick lunch, or snack in the afternoon. Try this especially for hungry kids after school, and they’ll love it!
