Sauce katsu-don is a local delicacy of Fukui Prefecture, consisting of pork loin or fillet coated in panko breadcrumbs, deep-fried to crispy perfection, and served over steamed rice. Sauce Katsudon differs from regular Katsudon, which is Tonkatsu (deep-fried pork) and eggs cooked in a sweet and salty broth placed over rice. In Sauce Katsudon, the hot cutlet is dipped in a savory sauce and then served over a bowl of rice. The Worcestershire-based sauce flavor pairs so well with the steamed rice that this dish has been beloved by people in Fukui for over 100 years. Today, the fame of Sauce Katsudon has spread across the country, and it is enjoyed at many restaurants and homes in Japan.

Tuna-mayo is a simple tuna salad that consists of canned tuna and Japanese mayonnaise, and tuna-mayo rice bowl (ツナマヨ丼) is an easy donburi rice bowl dish with tuna-mayo placed on a bowl of steamed rice. Tuna-mayo is one of the most popular fillings for Onigiri rice balls sold at any convenience stores in Japan. Creamy yet a bit tangy and salty Japanese tuna salad goes really well with steamed rice, and the flavor combination of tuna, mayo, rice, and nori seaweed is somewhat addictive. While Tuna Mayo Onigiri can be an excellent grab-and-go lunch in Japan, sadly not everyone is lucky to have convenience stores that sell such Onigiri nearby (certainly not where we live in the U.S.)

Loco Moco is a Hawaiian rice bowl dish with Hamburger Steak. Loco Moco hamburger is similar to Japanese Hamburger or Salisbury steak. The steak is served over Steamed Rice, with a thick gravy sauce and a fried egg placed on top. This Hawaiian soul food has got just the right taste and many people have fallen in love with it. The popularity of Loco Moco has spread to everywhere in the world, and now it’s a well-known Hawaiian dish in Japan too.

Buta Don is stir-fried pork seasoned with a soy sauce-based sauce over Steamed Rice.  Strong soy-garlic flavor and plenty of fat from pork make this dish rich and fulfilling, and it is very easy to make. Buta Don is a great one-bowl dish for hungry teenagers (and anybody else!) who want to eat good food fast.

Taco Rice is a Mexican themed rice bowl dish that originated in Okinawa, a Japanese island far south of the rest of Japan.  Although this is something they thought to be like the flavors of Mexico, its taste is very much altered to Japanese liking.  Taco Rice does vaguely resemble Mexican food in terms of using ingredients like cooked ground beef, tomatoes and avocado, but other than that, it is not very Mexican at all.  However, the dish became so popular in Okinawa that it is spreading out all over Japan, and now it can be seen in a lot of restaurants and cafes outside Okinawa.
