Meatloaf Wreath with Eggs Recipe

Meatloaf Wreath with Eggs is a festive twist on classic meatloaf, baked in a ring mold with boiled eggs hidden inside and decorated to look like a Christmas wreath. The hearty, juicy meat pairs beautifully with a sweet and tangy sauce, and the addition of fun-shaped, colorful vegetables adds a cheerful holiday touch. This easy Meatloaf Wreath with Eggs is a great alternative to traditional roast chicken or beef—festive, comforting, and satisfying without any compromise.

What’s Meatloaf Wreath with Eggs?

Meatloaf is a popular, everyday dinner dish in American cuisine. It’s a baked loaf made from seasoned ground meat—usually beef—mixed with ingredients like breadcrumbs, eggs, and onions, and often topped with a ketchup-based glaze. Because it’s such a familiar, home-style dish, it’s not usually something people choose for a special holiday like Christmas.

In Japan, however, Christmas is celebrated with very different food traditions. Many people opt for KFC fried chicken when buying ready-made food, and the connection between KFC and Christmas in Japan has an interesting history. Since Christmas in Japan is largely a commercial rather than religious event, the idea that “Western countries eat chicken for Christmas”—particularly the United States—spread widely. As a result, when families prepare Christmas dinner at home, they often choose Western-style dishes, and meatloaf is one of those options.

So having meatloaf for Christmas isn’t unusual in Japan, especially when it’s presented in a festive way. In fact, many everyday Japanese dishes don’t use an oven, so cooking with one already feels a bit special. Meatloaf with boiled eggs inside began appearing in family-friendly cookbooks and on cooking shows decades ago, eventually becoming a popular Western-style dish for celebrations. The egg in the center adds a festive look, making it perfect for holiday tables. Baking it in a ring-shaped mold enhances the presentation even more, transforming a simple meatloaf into a wreath-like centerpiece. This shape also makes it easier to decorate with colorful vegetables for an extra holiday touch. And don’t underestimate making a meatloaf—while not difficult, it does require a good number of ingredients and steps. That extra time and care make it especially fitting for a special occasion.

Tips and substitutions for Meatloaf Wreath with Eggs

If you regularly make meatloaf at home, feel free to use your own go-to recipe for the meat mixture. Otherwise, use ours as a base. And if you’d like to tweak the flavors to suit your taste, here are some helpful ideas.

  • Protein options – If you prefer an all-beef meatloaf, go ahead and use 100% ground beef. Ground chicken on its own tends to be too soft to hold the wreath shape, so it’s best to mix it with another meat such as beef or pork.
  • Vegetable options – We used blanched broccoli and fresh vegetables for decoration, but cut-out root vegetables work wonderfully too. Cook daikon or carrot rounds, then use small cookie cutters to create stars and hearts. It’s a fun activity, especially if you’re cooking with kids.
  • Spice options – You can easily customize the flavor by adding different spices to the meat mixture. For a bit of warmth, try nutmeg or allspice. Onion powder adds a savory aroma, while chopped fresh herbs bring a bright, fresh flavor.
  • Side dish options – If you like, fill the center of the wreath with mashed potatoes or a vegetable rice pilaf. It turns the wreath into a complete meal on one platter and adds an inviting, festive touch.

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce

  • mashed potatoes or vegetable pilaf
  • broccoli (blanched)
  • cherry tomatoes (halved)
  • yellow pepper (cut into fun shapes)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Chop brown onion and garlic finely. Heat a frying pan with oil, and cook garlic until aromatic. Then add onion and cook until soft but not browned. Let the mixture cool.
